In rehearsals for Stoke, a Love Story

Kat Hughes, a producer and director from the border between Stoke-on-Trent and Cheshire, brings a wealth of experiences and creative flair to her work. Over the past decade, Kat has dived headfirst into communities across the Midlands and North West, making her mark through artistic collaborations that resonate.

One highlight this year was her role as an Artist in Residence for PICL's Creative Freedom project. Here, she fuelled creativity and encouraged expression, empowering young individuals to explore their artistic side through an audio drama project she produced and facillitated.

In 2021, Kat landed a commission from Powered by Can for her candid audio reflection on pregnancy and childbirth during the Covid era. She's currently pouring her heart into this project as part of Gay Stoke, an initiative under her own Potboiler Theatre, generously supported by Historic England.

Kat's career highlights include her 12-year stint as Youth Theatre Director at The New Vic Theatre and her co-founding of Potboiler Theatre in 2014, showcasing her commitment to meaningful theatrical experiences and Stoke and surrounding areas.

At the core of Kat's artistic vision lies a desire to unite people, challenge norms, and celebrate humanity. Her portfolio boasts diverse projects staged in unconventional venues, from care homes to castles, each infused with her trademark blend of humour, heart, and authenticity.

As a producer and director of audio adventures, Kat pushes boundaries with projects like "The Music of Motherhood" podcast series and "The Secret City," a living history trail in Stoke-on-Trent. Her commitment to amplifying regional voices and captivating young audiences has earned recognition, with "Tale Trail to Wind in the Willows" receiving a nomination for a UK Theatre Award for Best Show for Young People in 2019.

In addition, Kat serves as the Producer and Facilitator for Stoke Creates' Cultural Forum, a role that reflects her dedication to fostering collaboration and creativity within the community.

Kat is endlessly curious about people, she loves rooms full of people and staging work that gives people a chance to really see each other.
